The Social Misfits are a hip-hop
collective hailing from various neighbourhoods in South-London. Primarily made
up of established local upcoming artists including Da-Essence, Shiesty da Gypsy,
I’ChelMee, Stone Circle, MelloTrauma, Sir Prestige and Mizola,
the all-star crew have been fast making a name for themselves on the UK Hip-hop
scene and are working hard to establish and maintain themselves as a premier
hip-hop crew representing the London sound universally. “We represent the dreams of
those talented youths that live in council
estates aspiring for universal recognition and we are determined not to be
bounded within the parameters of our locality, or constrained by the current
limitations of the UK hip-hop scene”,
comments founding member and lead producer Sir Prestige. Their international aspiration is
perhaps fuelled by one of the key aspects that differentiates the Social Misfits
from other groups, their multi-cultural line-up of members. As suggested by
their Kenyan-born frontman, “This crew is a true reflection of London’s
cosmopolitan façade. Though most of us Misfits reside here in various boroughs
of South London many of us were not even born in this country, some of us are
immigrants from overseas and thus that trans-continental universal flavour is
embodied upon us and we represent that through our music.” This fact is illustrated in their
latest release, a double CD album entitled “The Society Documented : Programme
One and Two”. This epic 40 track collection features dialects from various
parts of the world including London, Manchester, USA, West Indies, East Africa
(Swahili), South America (Creole) and France (French). The already critically
acclaimed album takes the concept of a dossier of reports from various
correspondents giving commentary about their surrounding environments and
lifestyles. The album is out on their own independent imprint, Social Misfit
Entertainment, and features guest contributions from Est’elle, 57th
Dynasty, Reveal, Real Elements, Nairobi Allstars, Saigon, etc. Since
their official formation in 1998 the various members have enjoyed a consistent
flow of media exposure for their self–financed independent releases. They have
been featured or favourably reviewed in all the main urban music magazines in UK
and most recently in Hip-hop Connection (Sept 01), RAGO (Issue 3), Blues &
Soul (Sept 01), etc., plus many foreign titles including East Africa’s leading
newspaper, Daily Nation (4th August 01), Africa’s finest music
magazine, Phat! (issue 6), etc They are
also currently enjoying local and national radio airplay from all the main
hip-hop DJs including regular spins from Tim Westwood (BBC Radio One),
Shortee Blitz and Big Ted aka Chubby Kidz (Kiss FM), Jenny Francis, 279
(Choice FM), etc. The group
are already renowned for their energetically paced shows and their universal
hip-hop sound is suited to various audiences. As well as
performing all over the UK they have twice performed in Kenya, (East Africa)
where they are fast becoming a household name.
Infact, with a growing fanbase that stretches form London to Nairobi (in
the longest possible route) the group have plans to export their live experience
all over the world. |
